NATION IN BRIEF : ARIZONA : Convicted Navajo to Be Kept Off Ballot

The Navajo Indian tribal council voted to keep suspended tribal Chairman Peter MacDonald off the ballot for the tribe’s forthcoming presidential election in Window Rock, Ariz. The council voted 71 to 11 against MacDonald and postponed the Nov. 6 election for 60 days. MacDonald has been found guilty in tribal District Court of 41 counts of bribery, theft by extortion and breaking tribal ethics laws. Businessmen testified that they had paid thousands of dollars in kickbacks in exchange for business contracts on the reservation.
