The Indian army said Saturday it has asked four generals suspected of dalliances with other officers’ wives to hang up their boots for good.

In what is developing as the first military morality drive since independence, the four were asked to take early retirement for “stealing the affections of a brother officer’s wife”--an offense under the Indian Army Act.

“These officers had developed a reputation for fooling around with wives of other officers and had become a nuisance,” said Lt. Gen. Bishnu Pandit, army adjutant-general. “We don’t intend to interfere in their private lives, but we have to enforce discipline.”
