House OKs $78 Billion for Agencies
The House Saturday passed a $78-billion spending bill for veterans, housing and other agencies that includes a cut of more than 20% in President Bush’s request for the space station.
The bill produced by a House-Senate conference committee now goes to the Senate for final action. It would provide funds for the fiscal year that started Oct. 1.
The measure includes $31 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs, $8.5 billion below the level originally approved by the House.
Also included is $23.7 billion for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, $2.2 billion below the original House level.
The bill contains $13.9 billion for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Of that, $1.9 billion is for development of the planned permanent space station.
NASA was instructed to revise its planning to reflect slower development.
