FROG MAN

Your articles on Garcia Marquez and Mark Jennings (“Frog Man,” by Kathryn Phillips, Sept. 2) were a thoughtful mix of the worlds of science and letters. From both men come remarkable insights into our interior and exterior lives. In a world increasingly conflicted over issues of intellect, spirit, science and ecology, each puts forth work worthy of study and support. From Garcia Marquez’s deep reflections of interior landscapes to Jennings’ arduous treks to gather and assimilate data, their messages speak of a world in flux and the need for all of us to pay attention to these changes that are taking place.

I am concerned, however, that while the writer’s success readily affords him to continue his work, the scientist struggles with inadequate funds to continue his field research. Surely, the work of both of these men is a valuable resource to all of us.

Through their visions and work they enable us to better understand our world; our decision-making will be the better for it. Continued coverage and financial support of these people and others like them must not be neglected. If we are to succeed as a society in coming to terms with each other and our environment, voices like these must be heard.
