Palestinians Barred From Jerusalem

Israeli forces blocked Palestinians from entering Jerusalem today to prevent clashes after the murders of three Jews by a knife-wielding Arab.

A Palestinian teen-ager was killed and 19 others were hospitalized with wounds suffered in clashes with Israeli troops today throughout the occupied West Bank, Arab reports said.

Also today, an 18-year-old Palestinian died of wounds suffered in an August, 1988, clash. Mohammed Naim abu Akar was known among Palestinians as “the living martyr” for surviving on intravenous feedings after Israeli bullets destroyed his intestines.

Despite the heightened security in Jerusalem, a Palestinian stabbed a Jew, slightly injuring him.

Scattered stone-throwing clashes with Israeli troops were reported in half a dozen towns and refugee camps in the occupied territories. Arab hospital officials said at least 19 Palestinians were admitted with gunshot wounds.

In the West Bank town of Jenin, Mahmoud Lahlouh, 14, died after a bullet hit him in the chest, the army said.

Serious clashes in Jerusalem began Oct. 8, when police fired on Muslims on the Temple Mount after they stoned Jewish worshipers at the nearby Western Wall. At least 19 Palestinians were killed and 140 wounded.

On Sunday, a knife-wielding Palestinian, apparently seeking to avenge the killings, attacked Jews in Jerusalem, killing three and wounding a 13-year-old boy.

Jews angered by Sunday’s killings stoned Arab cars and beat several Arab pedestrians, Israel radio said. It blamed members of the anti-Arab Kach Party, saying they were bent on inciting trouble.

After the violence, national police headquarters announced that the ban on Palestinians entering Jerusalem would continue for at least a second day Tuesday “in view of the present tension in the city.”
