The government Thursday turned down a request for political asylum from a Soviet hijacker who threatened to blow up an Aeroflot airliner.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that the hijacker, Nikolai Selivanov, had failed to show that he would be persecuted for his political beliefs in his home country.

Selivanov hijacked the airliner with 26 people aboard during a domestic flight Oct. 5.
