Irish police Thursday questioned eight men arrested after IRA “human bomb” attacks in Northern Ireland killed six British soldiers and a civilian who was forced to drive a car full of explosives to an army checkpoint.

They were picked up just hours after the synchronized proxy attacks inflicted the heaviest casualties on the British army in Northern Ireland in two years.

Five soldiers were killed at the Londonderry checkpoint along with a father of three who was forced to drive a bomb-packed car while his family was held hostage. He was blown to pieces.

A 65-year-old pensioner used as the driver in the car bombing of a border post at Newry escaped with a broken leg after shouting a warning. A 21-year-old soldier died in that blast.

A third man, tied to the seat of a car packed full of explosives, managed to wriggle free and escape at an army camp. The bomb failed to detonate.
