WORLD : Tokyo Protest on Mideast Troops
Thousands of demonstrators marched on Parliament late today to protest the proposed dispatch of troops to the Persian Gulf, in the latest expression of anger over the government bill.
Chanting “Protect the peace constitution,” the marchers walked about 1 1/2 miles through busy downtown boulevards before gathering in front of the Diet, or Parliament. They were led by members of the opposition Socialist Party.
Organizers said 30,000 had been expected, but police put the number at about 10,000. The demonstrators were kept near the curb by a large detail of police and marched peacefully.
