Gulls Capture Third Consecutive Game to Reach .500 Mark

The Gulls won their third consecutive game and fourth of five Saturday night by defeating Salt Lake, 2-1, in front of 3,942 at the Salt Palace.

Brent Sapergia scored the winning goal with 19 seconds remaining. It was his team-leading sixth goal and was assisted by Larry Floyd and Taylor Hall.

Salt Lake City scored first when Bryan Beasley beat goalie Glen Hanlon at 13:42 of the first period. It was the only one of 28 shots that got by Hanlon.

Salt Lake’s lead did not last long. The Gulls tied it 46 seconds later when Darren Lowe scored his second goal of the season on a power play. Mike Gober and Dennis Holland got the assists.

It stayed tied until 19:41 of the final period when Sapergia scored on a low back-hander to the glove side of goalie Warren Sharples.

For the first time, the Gulls finished with fewer shots (22) than their opponent.

The Gulls improved to 5-5-1 for 11 points. They trail first-place Peoria (8-1-0, 16) by five points. But the Gulls play host to Peoria Tuesday and Thursday then play at Peoria Saturday.
