MOVE OVER, JACQUES: The work’s about to start as well at the county’s Marine Studies Institute, which is planning to build its own research vessel, the Sea Explorer. . . . A study underwritten by Chevron is just in and shows that the institute could afford the operating costs. Plans are for a 90-foot pontoon-hull powerboat with a 29-foot beam, underwater viewing ports, a remote-controlled submersible drone and enough facilities to host overnight research, educational and fund-raising voyages. . . . If donations are raised on schedule, the boat could be launched in spring, 1993.
