Teresa De Francisci; Miss Liberty Model

Teresa De Francisci, 92, the model for Miss Liberty on the 1921 silver dollar. The dollar, created by Mrs. De Francisci’s husband, Anthony, marked the return of peace after World War I. It was issued from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934-35 before becoming a collector’s item. On the 50th anniversary of the coin, Mrs. De Francisci was honored by coin collectors with a plaque inscribed, “To a Lady of Peace.” Born near Naples, Italy, she sailed to America at 4 and grew up in Clinton, Mass. In New York City on Oct. 20.
