Ocean Dumping Ban Weighed: Delegates from more than 60 nations are meeting in London to debate a proposed global ban on ocean dumping of industrial waste. But the United States intends to seek further study before agreeing to a ban. Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden are calling for dumping at sea to be phased out by 1995. About 80% of ocean pollution is generated on land. Ten percent of that is industrial waste, and the rest is thrown or discharged from ships.
