Recycling is most effective when paired with environmentally conscious shopping decisions, according to Brooke Nash, Solana Recyclers executive director.

Nash directs an education program for schoolchildren and adults that teaches participants “pre-cycling” techniques.

“Packaging is a big issue,” she said. “There is a tremendous amount of packaging waste. Buy in glass whenever possible.”

Nash also advocates buying in larger quantities to avoid excess packaging, avoiding double-packaged items and using containers with lids rather than plastic wrap for storing left-overs.
