GOINGS ON : Lunar Ellipse : A 19th-Century Japanese artist puts a face on the moon--depicting 100 human emotions.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), in his woodblock print series “100 Aspects of the Moon,” used the waxing, waning and ever-changing moon to represent 100 faces of human emotion.

The series, the Japanese artist’s largest and most successful, is at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art through Jan. 27.

A slide show on the life and art of Yoshitoshi will be presented at the museum on Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m., with an admission fee of $3. On Nov. 9, a class on “How to Look at Oriental Art” will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. with a $5 registration fee at the door. A workshop on what to look for in Asian art will be held Nov. 10, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a $50 fee. Admission to the museum is $3, but is free on Thursdays and the first Sunday of each month. 963-4364.

In addition to the Japanese art exhibit, Santa Barbara is offering plenty of other international celebrations, music and plays.

The Mexican festival of El Dia de los Muertos, a day set aside to honor the dead, will be celebrated tonight and Friday at the Natural History Museum’s Fleischmann Auditorium, 682-4334. Dr. Luis Leal, a Chicano historian and literary critic, will discuss the traditions and history surrounding the Day of the Dead at 8 tonight; $3.

Fourth-grade children will present La Danza de los Viejitos, a traditional dance in which the spirits of old age are frightened away by the vigor of a group of old men, on Friday at noon in the auditorium. Included in museum admission of $3.

Mexican music, including the distinct regional sounds of Veracruz, Chiapas, mariachi, norteno, and the violin and guitar ballads from New Mexico’s Spanish Colonial heritage will be performed Wednesday at UC Santa Barbara. The Raices Musicales (Musical Roots) tour was produced by the National Council for the Traditional Arts. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show at Campbell Hall are $10, $12 and $14. 893-3535.

The Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the Arlington Theatre at 8 p.m. Monday. Tickets are $24 to $42. 966-4324. All-American performer Peggy Lee and her ensemble can also be heard at the Arlington at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25, $30 and $35. 963-4408.

Scottish music, from bagpipes to Celtic versions of popular songs, will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday at the Lobero Theatre. The Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band will play traditional pieces, while the Battlefield Band will play some old-time tunes as well as unique renditions of modern pop. Then Scottish dance champion Alex McGuire performs classic Highland dances. Tickets for this three-in-one show are $16 and $19. 963-0761.

There is a brand new venue for lovers of song and dance. Three disc jockeys from Zelo opened their own club, Shake, down the street at 525 State St. They promise plenty of house music and funk plus a computerized light show. Shake is open 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. There’s a $7 cover for the first visit and membership; $5 thereafter. 963-7756.
