Tuition Increase

Recently, I had to submit a $284 tuition supplement to Cal State Fullerton as a tuition increase. Most students had to only pay $18 because of their in-state status (I am an out-of-state student). I am very upset about this increase, and I ask whether this could go on in any other capacity besides the university system.

Because of poor planning, the students have to pay out of their pockets. This increase happened halfway through the term, after I had paid my $3,200 for tuition and fees before classes began. Adding in $284, I might have chosen to take fewer classes to keep my tuition down. I accepted the $3,200, but I did not expect to pay the additional money. The bill had to be paid within a week and came after the last day to drop classes had passed.

In the private sector we would not stand for commissioning a service and having an increase without consent. Next term depends on having this increase paid in full or I forfeit my chance to register for classes on time. This reminds me of Catch-22.

My question is: If you had paid to have your house painted (or any other service), and halfway through the job, they were going to charge more to finish it, would you stand for this?
