NATION : Damaged Jetliner Lands Safely
An American Airlines DC-10 jetliner flying from London to Dallas with 242 people on board made a safe emergency landing today at New York’s Kennedy International Airport after blowing a tire on takeoff and suffering damage to a wing flap.
Scores of emergency vans, ambulances and police vehicles were on standby for the landing of American Airlines Flight 51, carrying 225 passengers and a crew of 17, said Port Authority spokesman Allen Morrison.
“It landed safely, rolling under its own power,” Morrison said.
There was no visible smoke or other problems when the plane landed.
The plane first circled the airport, then landed on Kennedy’s longest runway.
