The search for a new director of the Los Angeles County Department of Children’s Services has come down to five candidates, all men, all high-ranking officials at government social service agencies, and none from California.

The finalists were chosen by a panel of social services and management experts after a private search firm examined several hundred applications, according to Martin Golds of the county administrator’s office. The Board of Supervisors will interview the five and make the final selection.

The candidates are C. Patrick Babcock, director of the Michigan Department of Social Services; Gene E. Daniel, regional director of the Texas Department of Human Services; Gerald P. Digre, deputy secretary for operations of the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services; Philip W. Johnston, Massachusetts secretary of Human Services, and Michael W. Weber, director of the Hennepin County Community Services Department in Minnesota.
