Gillespie Under Review for Qualification as Judge
Gov. George Deukmejian has submitted Insurance Commissioner Roxani Gillespie’s name to the state Bar’s Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation for their opinion on whether she is qualified to be named a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.
A member of the commission who disclosed this, but asked not to be identified, said that the action means that Gillespie probably will be appointed if the commission decides she is qualified.
A spokeswoman for Deukmejian said the governor’s office would have no comment.
Gillespie, the last appointed insurance commissioner before the job becomes an elective post in January, said last winter when she decided not to run for the post that she would not return to an insurance industry job. Before she was appointed, she had been counsel to a company.
