This week’s overwhelming nationalist victory in elections in the southern republic of Georgia could deal a blow to President Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s efforts to forge a new Soviet Union.

A nationalist victory in Sunday’s multi-party elections in Georgia had been widely expected. But the scale of the nationalist win came as a surprise. Official results announced Thursday night showed the nationalist Round Table winning 54.3% of the vote and 147 of 250 seats in parliament.

Zviad Gamsakhurdia, leader of the Round Table coalition that broke 70 years of Communist domination in Georgia, said Friday he expects the republic to achieve independence from Moscow in less than five years.
