A toxic waste collection drive in Camarillo over the weekend yielded 6,810 gallons of paint and oil, plus 119 drums of other hazardous materials--making it the largest waste roundup in Ventura County, officials said Monday.

Most of the materials will be disposed of, but about 1,375 gallons of latex paint will be remixed and used to eradicate graffiti, said Steve Miller, a Camarillo city employee.

This is the first drive of its kind in Camarillo, Miller said. “People have been waiting for us to do this for a number of years,” he said.

According to Miller, the Ventura County Regional Sanitation District, which sponsored the event, will pay about $130,000 to dispose of the waste.

“They have a big stake in keeping this out of the landfill,” Miller said of the sanitation district. “It’s protection for our environment.”

He said about 1,200 people, mostly Camarillo residents, participated in the event. City officials hope to hold another drive next year.
