World IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : Thatcher Moves Up Vote for Leadership
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher moved forward the annual vote for her Conservative Party’s leadership to Nov. 20. The sudden resignation last week of Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Howe underscored divisions within the governing party and prompted speculation that a challenger might try to oust Thatcher in the annual party election. The leader of the Conservatives--the party with the majority in Parliament--automatically becomes prime minister. Under party rules the election could have been held as late as Dec. 5.
