School Board Members to Ask Full-Time Status
Members of the Los Angeles school board were expected to be in Sacramento today to request that the State Board of Education make their jobs full-time and allow them to more than double their $24,000 annual salaries.
Board members say they work more than 40 hours per week and some, including board President Jackie Goldberg, say they can’t afford to live on their board salaries. Conflict-of-interest laws severely restrict the jobs they can hold.
The proposal is opposed by board member Leticia Quezada, who says the timing is unseemly because the board recently cut $200 million from the district’s budget. Quezada, the only board member who holds a full-time job, says she also puts in a 40-hour week on school business.
A committee of the state board will consider the proposals today and the full board is expected to take action on Friday.
