There’s Cher: Cher opened her Australian tour Tuesday night and impressed the crowd with her glitz. In one Sydney performance, the star had seven wardrobe changes. “And as the songs got bigger, the outfits got smaller, featuring . . . a leather thong to minis, beads and jeans,” a reviewer for the Sydney Telegraph Mirror said.

Princely Party: Two aides to a Saudi prince have quit because of the extravagant habits of his entourage, according to the Harvard Crimson newspaper. Sources close to the family of Prince Turki ibn Abdulaziz al Saud said Mustafa Aziz and Philippe Guyon cited “moral outrage over the conduct of the prince’s entourage” at a Cambridge, Mass., hotel. Prince Turki upset the locals with a lavish five-day party with sand and trees brought in for an oasis, traffic jams with his limos and by clearing a park to make room for a royal picnic.

Media Trips: Sarah Ferguson, England’s Duchess of York, told inquisitive school children Wednesday she has to mind her royal manners because the media dogs her footsteps. Broadcasting to 180 students over a rural radio network based in Broken Hill, Australia, the duchess said of the media: “They’re there watching. If you trip down the steps, they’ll criticize you for tripping down the steps.”
