An influential British parliamentary committee today urged Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and some newspapers to drop the “rhetoric of the battlefield” in their opposition to European monetary union.

A report by a special House of Lords panel said Britain should embrace a single currency and political union in the 12-nation European Community. It scorned Britain’s idea of a parallel currency.

“The current debate should be conducted in the language of progress, not the rhetoric of the battlefield,” the report said.

The report has no direct impact on government policy but will be debated in the House of Lords later this month and will be a rallying point for those opposed to Thatcher’s stand.
