A Canoga Park man was honored Thursday for rescuing two people trapped in a flaming car.

Rick Snyder, 31, received a commendation from the Los Angeles City Fire Department for his role in pulling two teen-agers from the burning wreckage at a Canoga Park intersection on Sept. 15, 1989, Capt. Alfred Stearns said.

Snyder and Ron Souza, 31, formerly of Simi Valley, helped right the small car, which had flipped over after a collision at De Soto Avenue and Parthenia Street. When the car burst into flames, the two men climbed into the vehicle, cut the seat belts and pulled out the driver and passenger, Stearns said.

Both occupants of the car later died.

Souza could not be found to be invited to the presentation, Stearns said.
