Share

The National Science Foundation has given UC Irvine $40,000 to help build a program that encourages minorities to become scientists and science teachers.

The four-month grant will support the campus’s Comprehensive Alliance for Minority Participation program, a new partnership between UC Irvine, the California State University campuses, community colleges, high schools and the private sector.

UC Irvine’s program is aimed at increasing the number of minority college students, especially blacks, American Indians, Filipinos and Latinos, who seek advanced science degrees or want to become science teachers. The grant was awarded to L. Dennis Smith, UC Irvine’s executive vice chancellor, and Eloy Rodriguez, a professor of biology and toxicology.
