NATION : Snowstorm Snarls New England

Icy roads, blustery winds that gusted to 69 m.p.h. and as much as 18 inches of overnight snow plagued New England today and brought seven inches of snow to Upstate New York. The weather was blamed for at least one traffic death.

Gusts up to 55 m.p.h. downed trees in western Massachusetts, and Block Island, R.I., reported gusts to 69 m.p.h., the National Weather Service said. A high-wind warning was posted overnight in northern New Jersey and southern New York.

Eighteen inches of snow fell in Lowell, Vt., and two feet of snow was reported outside Newport, Vt.
