A transport strike called to protest an Islamic law was paralyzing much of the country at the end of its first week today and presenting the new government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif its first crisis.

Bus drivers in Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab began the work stoppage Nov. 6, but it has gradually spread to other areas, and drivers of trucks, oil tankers, taxis and rickshaws have joined the protest.

The strike caused chaos today in the southern port of Karachi, the country’s largest city and chief financial center. Many schools, colleges, government offices, banks and private businesses were closed, and only private cars could be seen on the streets.
