Viewers toasted the 200th episode of “Cheers” last week by making its hourlong retrospective the top-rated show of the week with an estimated 52 million viewers, it was reported today.

The show got the highest rating and share of any program this season, including the World Series, according to NBC, which said “Cheers” has been No. 1 for six of the current season’s eight weeks. The World Series and “60 Minutes” each won one week.

NBC had good news also in the Sunday movie department as couch potatoes opted to watch Los Angeles crumble in “The Big One: The Great Los Angeles Earthquake,” Part 1, which was the top Sunday movie in 15th place.

The competition was emotional devastation--the real-life troubles of Patty Duke in “Call Me Anna” on ABC tied for 18th and the make-believe mayhem of the theatrical movie “Fatal Attraction” was in 27th place on CBS.

“Cheers” and “Earthquake” helped NBC win in the ratings for the week ending Sunday, A. C. Nielsen Co. said. NBC won with a 13.7 rating and a 22 share. ABC came in second with a 12.8 rating and a 21 share, while CBS had a 12.0 rating and a 20 share.

The 8-week-old season-to-date statistics still point to a tighter race than in recent years. NBC leads with a 13.3 rating and 22 share, followed by CBS with a 12.9 rating and a 22 share. ABC is close behind with a 12.6 rating and a 21 share.

Night-by-night competition saw NBC win Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, while ABC took Monday and Friday and CBS captured Sunday.

CBS may have been third for the week, but it tied NBC with each network placing four shows in the top 10, compared to two for ABC.

In recent seasons, CBS could count only on “60 Minutes” and “Murder, She Wrote,” but now “Designing Women” and “Murphy Brown” have become new kids on that elite block.

In the November sweeps competition, it’s still NBC on top, with CBS second and ABC third--but with only 1.6 rating points separating No. 1 from No. 3.

The top-rated of the new shows was again that “America’s Funniest Home Videos” clone, “America’s Funniest People” (ABC) in 12th place.

After that it was all the way down to 39th place for “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” (NBC), followed by “The Trials of Rosie O’Neill” (CBS), 41st; “Uncle Buck” (CBS), 43rd; “Married People” (ABC), 44th, and “Going Places” (ABC), 47th.

Both CBS and ABC had major disappointments last Saturday night. The episode of ABC’s “Twin Peaks” that revealed who killed Laura Palmer tied for 52nd, which is not exactly what happened on “Dallas” when they revealed who shot J. R.

It aired opposite the second half of a two-hour “Wiseguy” on CBS in which Stephen Bauer as Michael Santana replaced Ken Wahl as Vinnie Terranova, which came in 79th.

Viewers also showed they were creatures of habit. When NBC aired “Unsolved Mysteries” in its regular Wednesday night slot, it came in 10th. When the network aired another edition of the show on Sunday night, it rated 66th.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” was No. 1 for the 44th consecutive week, with an 11.6 rating and a 21 share. “CBS Evening News” with Dan Rather came in second with a 10.1 rating and an 18 share, while “NBC Nightly News” with Tom Brokaw had a 9.7 rating and an 18 share.

Each ratings point represents about 921,000 households. A share is the percentage of TV sets in use that are tuned to a particular show or network.
