New England Retailers Expect to Cut Jobs: A majority of New England retailers--overwhelmingly pessimistic about prospects for the upcoming Christmas season--expect to cut the number of employees they have, according to a survey. Fifty-three percent of the region’s retailers anticipated a decrease in the number of employees this fall and winter, and 10% said they will even reduce seasonal hiring, according to the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche. Only 10% planned increases in hiring. Also, 67% expect lower sales this holiday season than last year, while 87% anticipate lower profits.
