World IN BRIEF : MEXICO : Cesar Chavez and 2 Others Honored
Mexico honored three Mexican-American leaders--a farm worker organizer and two professors--for “their efforts in defense of the human rights of Mexican nationals in the United States and the preservation of Mexican culture.” The honorees were United Farm Workers Union leader Cesar Chavez in California; Americo Paredes, a University of Texas professor, and Julian Zamora of Colorado, a sociologist and former professor. President Carlos Salinas de Gortari awarded them the order of the Aztec Eagle at ceremonies in Mexico City.
