Ramsey Clark Meets With Hussein, Says Iraqi Hopes to Avert Showdown
Former U.S. Atty. Gen. Ramsey Clark met Monday with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who told Clark he hopes there will be no showdown with the United States, the official Iraqi News Agency said.
Clark said he came to Baghdad for three days to learn Iraq’s position and to help win the release of hostages.
It was the first visit by a recognized U.S. figure since the Rev. Jesse Jackson came here in August.
“I am here to impress the government that the people who want to leave should be able to do so. I have a civil rights background, and I think violation of individual rights could create tensions and difficulties,” Clark said.
He said the U.S. government is rushing to a military solution and should try negotiations.
“Unwillingness to talk is never acceptable. You must not lose complete communication with an enemy because ignorance can cause mistakes,” he said.
