A 73-year-old woman was swept up by a city street maintenance truck in Los Angeles Tuesday.

Irene Denim, of South Los Angeles, was reported in fair condition at County-USC Medical Center after being treated for scrapes and bruises on the left side of her body, a hospital spokeswoman said. Denim was undergoing tests to determine whether she suffered any internal injuries, the spokeswoman said.

Police said Denim had stepped off the curb and was inadvertently struck down as the sweeper rounded a corner at the intersection of Slauson and Vermont avenues. The driver came to a halt after hearing Denim’s cries from underneath the sweeper’s rotating brushes. Officials in the city’s Department of Street Mintenance said an investigation is forthcoming pending a police report of the incident.
