WORLD : Police Raid Perils Berlin Regime
A huge police raid to evict squatters from a Berlin neighborhood threatened today to bring down the city’s coalition government.
The environmental Greens party condemned the use of violence to evict squatters from city tenements this week and said it is considering quitting the local government, led by Mayor Walter Momper, a Social Democrat.
Berliners will elect a new government Dec. 2, when national elections also will be held--the first since Germany reunified Oct. 3. Momper is expected to govern with a minority until then.
