SHORT TAKES : Singing Police Arrest Rocker
The law caught up to fugitive rocker Bob Baldori in Toronto, but his lawyer says the arrest was cordial, with officers asking for autographs and serenading him with his 1967 hit, “Who Do You Love?”
The FBI said the 47-year-old musician was arrested Wednesday by immigration authorities and was expected to be sent back to Michigan this weekend.
Baldori, known as “Boogie Bob,” has been a federal fugitive since February when he disappeared before his arraignment on drug charges. Authorities seized 88 pounds of marijuana Jan. 16 from his home near Lansing.
His lawyer, Mark Fox, said Baldori and his girlfriend were returning to their Toronto apartment when they were met by police and immigration officials.
“There were about eight officers and most of them wanted his autograph. Then they sang to him. They broke into ‘Who Do You Love?’ ” he said.
The song is a Bo Diddley classic. In 1967, Baldori and a band called The Woolies recorded the song, which made the charts and was the group’s only hit.
