NEWPORT BEACH : Laying Foundation at Balboa Peninsula
The Balboa Peninsula is going to get a little heavier this weekend.
Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, more than 14,000 tons of concrete will be poured as the foundation for a new retail and residential plaza along the Newport Beach bayfront.
About 200 trucks will be used in the 16-hour effort, making more than 800 runs from a Fountain Valley concrete factory to the site of the new development on Newport Boulevard between 26th and 28th streets.
The 28th Street Marina complex, which is scheduled to be completed in early 1992, includes condominiums and retail services.
Normally, foundations of this size are laid in stages, according to the concrete manufacturer involved in the project. However, given the busy location, he said that it was necessary to do the work all at once.
The construction project will require the closure of northbound Newport Boulevard between 26th and 28th streets from 10 p.m. Friday to mid-afternoon Saturday.
