Share

The County Board of Supervisors has designated today as Don E. Smith Day to honor the retiring mayor of Orange.

Supervisor Don R. Roth proposed the resolution, calling Smith “the exception to the rule” among city leaders for his extensive involvement in countywide agencies such as the Orange County Sanitation and Solid Waste Disposal districts. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the board.

Smith, 69, leaves office Nov. 20 after nearly 25 years on the City Council.

He served as mayor from 1968 to 1972 and was again elected to that position in 1988. He announced his retirement after surgery last June to remove several blood clots from his pulmonary arteries.

Smith has said he hopes to continue some involvement in civic matters but also plans to travel with his wife, Gladie. A farewell reception for Smith will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Weimer Reception Room at City Hall. The event is open to the public.
