President Bush today signed into law a measure indefinitely banning U.S. mining in the Antarctic.

“By placing an indefinite ban on United States mineral activities in Antarctica until a new international minerals agreement has been approved by Congress, the United States is sending a strong environmental message to the rest of the world,” the White House said in a statement.

In a White House lawn ceremony, the President also signed bills expanding U.S. research efforts on global warming and climate change and establishing new nature preserves in the Florida Keys, Louisiana’s bayou country, New Jersey’s Walkill River area and Red Rock Cavern in southern Nevada.
