John S. Cain, president and chief operating officer of Alpha Microsystems, has resigned from the struggling computer manufacturer for personal reasons, the company said Friday.

Cain, who has been with Alpha Micro since 1983, will be replaced by Clarke Reynolds, the company’s vice chairman and a director. Cain is the second high-ranking executive to leave the firm in two months.

On Oct. 8, Richard C. Wilcox, a company co-founder, resigned as vice chairman and chief technology officer to pursue other interests. Ten days later, the company disclosed that it had received an acquisition offer from New York-based Aril Group.

“It is with great sadness and regret that we accept Mr. Cain’s resignation,” Alpha Micro Chairman Robert B. Hitchcock said. “However, we understand his desire to pursue other opportunities and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

David Young, chief financial officer, said he does not expect Cain’s departure to adversely affect the ongoing acquisition talks with the Aril Group.

Young said Cain decided to leave for personal reasons, including a desire to pursue other business opportunities.

Cain declined to comment when reached at his home in Santa Ana.

He joined the firm as director of management information systems in 1983 and was named chief operating officer in 1987. He was promoted to president in 1988. During his tenure, the company acquired two companies, Fujitsu Microsystems and Rexon Business Machines.

Alpha Micro makes a line of business computer systems. Hurt by competition within the struggling minicomputer industry, the company launched a cost-cutting plan in August that included laying off 35 employees.

Alpha Micro reported a second-quarter loss of $1.1 million on sales of $13.5 million, contrasted with earnings of $113,000 on sales of $13.1 million last year.
