Army and Marines Call Up 15,092

The Army and Marine Corps on Friday ordered more than 15,000 reservists from across the country to report for duty in support of Operation Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf.

The Army said it is calling up 14,006 national guardsmen and army reservists from 35 states to active duty. More than 12,000 additional troops will be called up within days, including the first combat reserve units to be activated in the gulf crisis, according to the Army.

The Marine Corps called up 1,086 combat reserves, including 109 members of Company B, 4th Tank Battalion, Yakima, Wash., which will report for duty with the 2nd Tank Battalion at the Marine combat training center at Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Also, the Marines are activating 324 members of the 8th Tank Battalion at Rochester, N.Y., for duty with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

The 2nd Tank Battalion and the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force are active duty units that are scheduled to deploy to the gulf.

The total number of reserves activated from all military services since President Bush first authorized their use for the Persian Gulf operation now stands at 51,587, from among 122,500 authorized.
