Paul H. Silverman has joined Beckman Instruments Inc. as director of scientific affairs, a new position.

He was formerly director of the University of California Systemwide Biotechnology Research and Education Program and a senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.

Beckman Instruments, based in Fullerton, is a manufacturer of laboratory equipment.
