Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti will top the bill at an opera festival in Red Square next June, Tass news agency reported.

The 10-day festival in the shadow of the onion domes of the Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral will be directed by Soviet film producer Andrei Konchalovsky, who recently staged Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades” at Italy’s La Scala opera house.

It is expected to attract 25,000 spectators, including 10,000 foreigners, each day.

Red Square, traditional site of Soviet military parades, has in recent years been host to events unthinkable before President Mikhail S. Gorbachev came to power.
