GM Engines to Japan: General Motors will ship 10,000 engine cylinder blocks a month to Nissan Motor Co. for installation in Nissan cars in Japan starting in April. Observers said the deal was worth less than $1 million a month, and the job impact at the GM foundry in Defiance, Ohio, was described as minimal. But it marked the first Japanese contract for GM’s huge foundry division, and a spokesman said GM hoped it would be “a foot in the door.” Nissan, facing a foundry capacity shortage in Japan, said the deal will add to its $740 million a year in imports of U.S. auto parts.
