WARSAW : Hail To The Chief

Share

The long-awaited presidential contest between Solidarity leader Lech Walesa and Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki comes to a vote Sunday, with latest polls showing Walesa holding a 40%-25% lead. Other voters are either undecided or back one of four minor candidates.

Their campaigns have reflected the candidates’ personal styles: Walesa’s ebulliant, exciteable, unpredictable; Mozowiecki’s calm, modest, and, some suggest, reluctant.

Walesa promises “acceleration” of reforms, but pledges to retain much of the Mazowiecki team in government. His likely choice for prime minister should he win: Current Finance Minister Leszek Balcerowicz, the architect of Poland’s well-regarded economic reform program.
