October’s New AIDS Cases Up 56% Over ’89
Doctors in Los Angeles County confirmed 301 new AIDS cases in October, a 56% increase over the same month last year, health officials said Tuesday.
Through October, 2,141 cases had been confirmed in the county this year, a 9% increase over the same 10-month period last year.
Anglos account for 56% of the AIDS cases this year, Latinos 23%, blacks 18% and Asians 2%.
Since 1984, when statistics were first compiled, 10,756 cases of AIDS have been confirmed in the county and 7,322 AIDS-related deaths recorded for a mortality rate of 68%.
