The Reds signed free-agent left-hander Tom Browning to a four-year contract worth $11.9 million with a club option for a fifth year at $3.5 million.

Browning, 30, was 15-9 for the Reds last season with a 3.80 ERA in 227 2/3 innings. He was 1-1 in the National League playoffs against Pittsburgh and won Game 3 of the Reds’ World Series sweep.

Browning and his agent, Jim Bronner, said that the player had been leaning toward a five-year deal that would have been worth $3 million a year with the San Francisco Giants.

Bronner also said that two undisclosed teams had made Browning five-year offers and that the Dodgers and Cubs had also been pursuing him.

Another free-agent pitcher, Mike Boddicker, who helped the Boston Red Sox win the American League East last season, went to the Kansas City Royals for $9.25 million for three years.

Boddicker was 17-6 with a 3.36 ERA for Boston.
