CAL ARTS : Grant Will Help Renovate Theater

CalArts in Valencia has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Security Pacific Foundation to help in refurbishing the school’s modular theater, the university’s most frequently used performing space.

After 20 years of use, the theater must be renovated to ensure student safety, meet contemporary technical standards for theater and enhance the comfort of audiences, CalArts President Steven D. Lavine said.

“This is important to us,” he said. “Our students are operating at a professional level and more Los Angeles audiences need to see them work.”

“We are pleased with this grant because it will help us to put our best foot forward,” said Ruben Sierra, theater school dean. “We want our entire community to join us in celebration of all our productions.”

The modular theater is a flexible facility.

The floor is divided into sections and through a unique piston-driven system, each section can be raised or lowered.

CalArts is a nonprofit, four-year accredited institution dedicated to educating the artist and providing the best environment for arts training.
