Japanese Car Plants Cost Jobs: Building Japanese cars in the United States cost America 36,000 jobs in 1988 and 1989, congressional auditors say. The General Accounting Office said new Japanese factories generally are more efficient than those of U.S. auto makers and require fewer workers to produce the same number of cars. The GAO said about 11,000 jobs were lost in 1989 and 25,000 the previous year. Fewer jobs were lost last year, in part because the Japanese manufacturers bought more parts from U.S. sources, the agency said.
