Robert Kiley resigned today as the longest-serving chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the nation’s largest transit system, which carries 6 million passengers daily.

Kiley, 55, appointed by Gov. Mario M. Cuomo in 1983, said he will become president and chief executive officer of Fischbach Corp., an electrical engineering firm based in New York.

The MTA oversees New York’s massive subway and bus system, the Long Island Rail Road, the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority and the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority.

Kiley is credited with having rebuilt the system at a cost of billions of dollars of public funds. He also dramatically increased fares for users of the metropolitan area’s trains, subways, buses, bridges and tunnels.
