PLATFORM : Baffling Situation

SHERRILL A. LEW of Mt. Washington placed her 6-year-old son in a private school because of the state of the Los Angeles school system. She was asked about the quality of public education:

When you have people who are more interested in getting hold of the Ambassador property and spending millions of dollars to get that property than in doing something about making class sizes smaller and focusing on keeping good teachers and doing things to make teachers feel like professionals, you’ve got a problem.

I just cannot envision sending my child to public schools (in my area). I would have terrible guilt trips if I sent my kid to a school where I knew he could not get a good education. It baffles me, because I know I pay as much for private school as the public school gets per kid. Why can’t the public schools, getting as much money as they do, do something about class sizes, making sure these kids learn reading, writing, comprehension, problem solving?

The teachers, principals and staff at each school (should) be autonomous. Instead of dictating things from on high, let them work among themselves to try figure out how to get to the kids.
